MTN FlyX vs Airtel ODU: Which 5G Internet Is Better?

MTN FlyX vs Airtel ODU: Which One Should You Use?

If you live in Nigeria and fibre internet has not reached your street, you no longer have to depend entirely on a smartphone hotspot or MiFi for home broadband. Both MTN FlyX and Airtel 5G SmartConnect ODU are designed to solve this problem. They use an Outdoor Unit (ODU) installed outside your home or business to capture a stronger cellular signal and then deliver internet connectivity indoors. The two services look remarkably similar on paper, but there are important differences in price, speed options, equipment ownership, coverage, installation and data-policy terms.

MTN currently charges ₦30,000 for up to 50Mbps and ₦45,000 for up to 100Mbps on FlyX. Airtel currently charges ₦25,000 for up to 50Mbps and ₦45,000 for up to 100Mbps on its SmartConnect ODU. So, is Airtel simply the better deal because its entry plan is cheaper? Not necessarily.

MTN FlyX: What Are You Getting?

MTN FlyX is the company's newer outdoor fixed-broadband solution designed for homes and small businesses, particularly locations where FibreX is not yet available. MTN Outdoor Unit is professionally installed outside the premises at a location where signal strength is strongest. It then connects to an indoor unit that distributes Wi-Fi around the building. The current FlyX plans are:

  • FlyX 50 — ₦30,000 for 30 days

  • FlyX 100 — ₦45,000 for 30 days

MTN advertises both as truly unlimited and says they have no Fair Usage Policy. The first subscription also comes with a free-to-use outdoor unit, indoor unit, power bank and professional installation. That means you aren't expected to purchase the entire ODU hardware package separately before getting started.

Airtel 5G SmartConnect ODU: What Are You Getting?

Airtel's SmartConnect follows a very similar concept. The Outdoor Unit is installed outside your building to capture a stronger 4G/5G signal and connects to an indoor unit for Wi-Fi distribution.

Airtel currently advertises:

  • Unlimited 50Mbps — ₦25,000 / 30 days

  • Unlimited 100Mbps — ₦45,000 / 30 days

The company says the SmartConnect ODU and installation are provided free under its current offer. Airtel also says the device can support at least 32 connected users, making it suitable for households and small offices. There is an important catch, however. Airtel states that the SmartConnect device remains Airtel's property and can be retrieved if the customer fails to maintain the minimum ₦25,000 subscription for three consecutive months. So don't think of the free router as equipment you automatically own.

Price: Airtel Wins the 50Mbps Battle

If your budget is the biggest consideration, Airtel has the advantage.

₦45,000

At 50Mbps, Airtel is ₦5,000 cheaper every month. Over 12 months, that's a potential ₦60,000 difference. For a student, remote worker or family trying to reduce monthly internet expenses, that is significant. But the price difference disappears at 100Mbps.

Both currently charge ₦45,000 for up to 100Mbps. Therefore, the 50Mbps Airtel plan is the obvious price winner, while the 100Mbps comparison becomes much more about network performance.

Speed: MTN and Airtel Are Basically Tied

There is no clear winner from the advertised speed tiers.

Both companies offer: 50Mbps and 100Mbps

The bigger question is what happens at your particular location. A 100Mbps subscription does not mean your device will permanently download at 100Mbps. Actual performance can be affected by:

  • 5G coverage

  • Signal strength

  • Tower capacity

  • Network congestion

  • Indoor Wi-Fi conditions

  • Number of connected devices

  • Weather and infrastructure conditions

This is why one person can have an excellent experience with Airtel ODU while another person in the same city may prefer MTN. The tower serving your house matters more than the network's national reputation.

Unlimited Data: This Is Where MTN Has an Interesting Advantage

Both services market their plans around unlimited internet. However, the policies deserve closer attention. MTN says FlyX plans have no Fair Usage Policy (No FUP). Airtel's SmartConnect page, meanwhile, displays a 1TB/1.5TB FUP qualification while describing its plans as unlimited. For an ordinary household using YouTube, Netflix, social media, video calls and work applications, this may never become an issue. But heavy users should pay attention. If you regularly download hundreds of gigabytes of games, operating-system updates, videos, cloud backups or professional datasets, the FUP terms deserve consideration before choosing Airtel.

For very heavy data users, MTN has the clearer advantage on the published policy.

Installation: Both Are Convenient

Neither service requires you to figure out where to mount the outdoor receiver yourself. MTN says an MTN-certified installer will schedule the installation and position the ODU where signal strength is strongest. Airtel similarly offers free installation with its SmartConnect ODU package. The installation itself is important because an ODU only makes sense if the outdoor equipment can obtain a better signal than a conventional indoor router. For that reason, don't judge the service solely by the router's specifications.

Installation location can have a major impact on the connection you eventually receive.

Coverage: Test Before You Buy

This is arguably the most important part of the comparison. MTN FlyX is designed to provide broadband in locations where FibreX is unavailable, but it still depends on suitable MTN network coverage. MTN ODU is positioned to capture the strongest available MTN signal.

Airtel says its SmartConnect can be deployed across Nigeria where its network coverage is available. But national coverage doesn't tell you exactly how your street will perform. Your neighbour could receive excellent 5G while your house gets weaker service because of:

  • Building obstruction

  • Distance from the tower

  • Terrain

  • Network congestion

  • Different tower serving the property

The best test is therefore simple:

Before committing to either ODU, test both networks at the exact location where the outdoor unit will likely be installed.

If possible, use a 5G phone and run speed tests at different times of the day.

Which Is Better for a Home?

For a normal Nigerian household, I would divide the decision into two scenarios.

Choose Airtel ODU if:
You have strong Airtel 5G coverage and want to spend as little as possible. The ₦25,000 50Mbps plan is particularly attractive for families, students and remote workers who don't necessarily need 100Mbps.

Choose MTN FlyX if:
MTN performs significantly better at your address or you expect extremely heavy data usage. The absence of an FUP on MTN's published FlyX plans is also attractive for users who don't want to worry about a usage threshold.

Which Is Better for a Business?

This is a more complicated decision. For a small office, both services can provide enough bandwidth for:

  • Zoom and Google Meet

  • Cloud applications

  • Email

  • POS systems

  • Social media

  • Web browsing

  • Software updates

  • File sharing

But I wouldn't recommend using either as your only connection if internet downtime could cost your business money. A better setup would be:

MTN FlyX + Airtel mobile backup or Airtel ODU + MTN mobile backup

This gives you a second network if the primary connection experiences an outage. For a business, redundancy is often more important than whether your main connection is 50Mbps or 100Mbps.

MTN FlyX vs Airtel ODU: Pros and Cons

MTN FlyX

Pros:

  • Up to 100Mbps

  • ₦30,000 50Mbps plan

  • ₦45,000 100Mbps plan

  • Truly unlimited according to MTN

  • No FUP

  • Free-to-use ODU

  • Free-to-use indoor unit

  • Free professional installation

  • Power bank included

  • Useful where FibreX isn't available

Cons:

  • 50Mbps costs ₦5,000 more than Airtel

  • Actual performance depends on MTN coverage

  • Equipment is free-to-use rather than necessarily owned by the customer

  • Fixed-location broadband

Airtel 5G SmartConnect ODU

Pros:

  • ₦25,000 for up to 50Mbps

  • ₦45,000 for up to 100Mbps

  • Free ODU under the offer

  • Free installation

  • Unlimited plans

  • Outdoor signal reception

  • Backup power

  • Supports multiple connected devices

  • Longer-duration plans available

Cons:

  • Airtel's published page includes a FUP qualification

  • Device remains Airtel property

  • Performance depends on Airtel coverage and congestion

  • 100Mbps costs the same as MTN's 100Mbps plan

  • Fixed-location service

MTN FlyX vs Airtel ODU: Which One Should You Buy?

For the cheapest 50Mbps internet: Airtel at ₦25,000, Airtel gives you the lower monthly entry price.

For 100Mbps: It's a draw Both currently charge ₦45,000. Choose the network that performs better at your location.

For extremely heavy data users: MTN FlyX; MTN explicitly states that FlyX has no FUP.

For budget-conscious households: Airtel; Saving ₦5,000 every month on the 50Mbps plan makes Airtel particularly attractive.

For businesses: Whichever network is stronger + a backup connection. Don't make your business dependent on a single cellular network.

Final Verdict

The MTN FlyX vs Airtel ODU competition is much closer than simply looking at their prices. Airtel wins the 50Mbps price battle with its ₦25,000 monthly plan, compared with ₦30,000 for MTN FlyX. At 100Mbps, however, both providers charge ₦45,000. MTN's biggest advantage is its published No-FUP positioning, while Airtel's biggest advantage is the lower entry price.

So our recommendation is straightforward:

  • Best for affordability: Airtel 5G SmartConnect ODU.

  • Best for heavy unlimited usage: MTN FlyX.

  • Best for 100Mbps: whichever network is faster and more stable at your address.

  • Best for business: either one, but keep another network as backup.

And this is the biggest lesson from comparing Nigerian 5G broadband services: Don't buy an ODU because the advertised speed looks impressive. Buy it because the network performs well at your exact location.

A ₦25,000 Airtel connection that consistently delivers usable speeds can be better than a ₦45,000 MTN connection that struggles with congestion. Likewise, if MTN gives you a significantly stronger signal and more consistent performance, paying ₦5,000 extra for the 50Mbps FlyX plan could be money well spent. If you are choosing between the two, test MTN and Airtel at your home or office before committing to a long-term subscription.
