Onyx Studio 9 vs JBL Pulse 4: Price, Specs & Best Buy in Nigeria

If you're looking for a premium Bluetooth speaker in Nigeria, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 9 and JBL Pulse 4 are two very different options. The Onyx Studio 9 is built primarily around powerful home listening, stereo sound and premium audio quality, while the JBL Pulse 4 puts more emphasis on portability, 360-degree sound, waterproofing and its colourful LED light show.

There is also a major price difference in Nigeria. Current Nigerian listings put the Onyx Studio 9 around ₦295,000–₦350,000, although some sellers list it considerably higher. Konga, for example, currently has one listing at ₦295,000, while another is ₦348,000.

The JBL Pulse 4 can be found much cheaper from some Nigerian retailers, with prices ranging from roughly ₦120,000 to ₦275,000, although some marketplace listings are dramatically higher. So, which one makes more sense for your money?

Sound Quality: Onyx Studio 9 Wins

If sound quality is your number-one priority, the Onyx Studio 9 is the better choice. Harman Kardon's speaker uses a 120mm woofer combined with three 20mm tweeters and produces 50W RMS. It also features the company's Constant Sound Field technology, designed to widen the soundstage and improve clarity. This makes the Onyx Studio 9 particularly attractive for people who listen to music at home and care about vocals, bass and separation between different parts of a song. The speaker's physical size also matters. At 4.2kg, this is not an ultra-portable speaker that you casually throw into a backpack. It's better described as a movable home speaker.

You can move it from the living room to the bedroom, balcony or another part of the house, but it isn't designed around extreme portability. The Pulse 4 takes the opposite approach. Its 20W output is significantly lower, but JBL uses a 360-degree speaker arrangement so that sound can be heard around the speaker. That's useful when several people are sitting around it rather than directly in front of it.

Winner for audio power and home listening: Onyx Studio 9

JBL Pulse 4 Is Much Better for Portability

This is where JBL fights back. The Pulse 4 weighs only 1.26kg, compared with 4.2kg for the Onyx Studio 9. That's a huge difference. If you're travelling, going to a friend's house, taking a speaker to a beach or moving around frequently, carrying a 1.26kg cylindrical speaker is considerably easier than carrying a 4.2kg home speaker. The Pulse 4 is also considerably smaller, measuring 9.6 × 9.6 × 20.7cm.

The Onyx Studio 9 measures approximately 28.9 × 28.8 × 13cm. So if you want something that can easily fit into a travel bag or be carried around during an outdoor gathering,

JBL wins comfortably.

Battery Life: JBL Pulse 4 Takes It

The JBL Pulse 4 has an advertised battery life of up to 12 hours, compared with up to eight hours for the Onyx Studio 9. The difference becomes important when you're away from electricity. For example, imagine you're having a weekend gathering and want music playing throughout the afternoon. The Pulse 4's additional four hours gives you more flexibility. However, advertised battery life should not be interpreted as a guaranteed 12 hours at maximum volume. Actual runtime depends on volume, lighting and other usage conditions.

Winner: JBL Pulse 4

Outdoor Use: JBL Pulse 4 Is the Safer Choice

This is probably the biggest practical advantage of the JBL. The Pulse 4 has an IPX7 waterproof rating. JBL says the speaker can withstand being submerged in up to three feet of water for a limited period, making it considerably more suitable around pools and sudden rain. That doesn't mean you should deliberately leave it underwater, but it provides substantially more protection than an ordinary indoor speaker. The Onyx Studio 9, meanwhile, is primarily designed as a premium home speaker. Harman Kardon's official specifications do not position it as an IP-rated waterproof outdoor speaker.

So if you're buying a speaker for:

  • Pool parties

  • Beach trips

  • Outdoor events

  • Camping

  • Travelling

  • Areas where rain is possible

JBL Pulse 4 is the more sensible option.

The LED Light Show Is a Major JBL Advantage

There's another reason the Pulse 4 remains popular: its appearance. The speaker has a 360-degree LED light show that reacts to music. JBL also provides controls through its app for changing lighting patterns and effects. For a house party, this can make the speaker feel much more like entertainment equipment rather than simply an audio device.

The Onyx Studio 9 is considerably more understated. Its circular design, fabric covering and aluminium handle give it a premium appearance, but there is no comparable 360-degree party lighting system.

Therefore:

For serious music listening → Onyx Studio 9

For party atmosphere → JBL Pulse 4

Nigerian Price: Which Offers Better Value?

This is where the comparison becomes complicated because Nigerian prices vary significantly by seller. Current listings show the Onyx Studio 9 around ₦295,000–₦348,000 from some Konga sellers, while another listing is ₦390,000. Jumia currently has listings around ₦400,000 and above.

The Pulse 4 has an even wider range. One Nigerian retailer lists it at ₦129,999, while another lists it at ₦225,000 and Shoppers Warehouse lists it at ₦272,900. Some Jumia listings are much higher, so buyers should verify the seller, condition and warranty carefully.

That means the Pulse 4 can potentially save you well over ₦100,000 compared with an Onyx Studio 9. But be careful when you see unusually cheap listings. Check whether the product is new, used, refurbished, imported, or covered by a meaningful warranty.

Which Speaker Is Better for a Nigerian Home?

For a Nigerian home, I'd lean toward the Onyx Studio 9 if the budget allows. It makes more sense for someone who wants a premium speaker permanently available in the living room, bedroom, office or entertainment area. Its 50W RMS system, larger woofer and three tweeters are better suited to filling a room with richer sound.

The built-in battery is useful during power interruptions, while the USB output can also provide emergency charging for a phone. However, the Pulse 4 is the better option if your home entertainment involves moving the speaker frequently or taking it outdoors.

Final Verdict

There isn't one winner for everyone.

Choose the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 9 if you want: Better sound quality, 50W RMS power, stronger room-filling audio, modern Bluetooth 5.3, premium construction and a speaker primarily designed for home listening. At around ₦295,000–₦350,000 from some Nigerian sellers, it is expensive, but the hardware is substantially more powerful.

Choose the JBL Pulse 4 if you want:

Portability, 12-hour battery life, IPX7 waterproofing, 360-degree sound and a colourful LED light show. And if you can find a genuine unit around ₦120,000–₦225,000, it can represent significantly better value for casual listeners and outdoor users.

Bottom line: If you have around ₦300,000 to spend and sound quality is your priority, buy the Onyx Studio 9. If you want a much lighter speaker for travelling, parties and outdoor use—and don't need the extra audio power—the JBL Pulse 4 is the smarter buy.

Prices in Nigeria can change quickly, so treat the figures above as current market references rather than fixed retail prices.
