Sony PSP 3 / PS6 Portable: Expected Price, Specs & Buying Guide

If you've been waiting for Sony to make a proper handheld PlayStation again, there is finally something interesting to watch. Reports suggest Sony is developing a new portable console, often referred to online as Project Canis, that could launch alongside the next-generation PlayStation 6. Unlike the PlayStation Portal, which primarily streams games from another device, this rumored handheld is expected to run games locally. That is the part that makes the rumor exciting. But before you start saving money, there is something important to understand: Sony has not officially announced a PSP 3, confirmed the Canis name, or released a final price or specification sheet. The information currently circulating comes from leaks and industry reporting. So, what could this new PlayStation handheld actually offer?

What Is Project Canis?

The rumored Canis is described as a standalone PlayStation handheld designed to run games natively rather than relying on constant cloud streaming. That would make it fundamentally different from the PlayStation Portal. The Portal is useful for Remote Play, but Canis is reportedly being developed as a proper gaming console with its own processor, memory and storage. The bigger idea is that Sony could offer two ways to play the same generation of games: a powerful PS6 home console for the TV, and a portable system for gaming on the go. That is still a rumored strategy, but it is one of the more interesting possibilities for Sony's next generation.

The Biggest Question: Can It Run PS5 Games?

This is probably the feature that matters most. The reports suggest Canis could support PS4 and PS5 games, with some discussion of compatibility with the upcoming PS6 generation. If that happens, it could make the handheld much more attractive than a device with a completely separate game library. Imagine buying a game for your PlayStation ecosystem and being able to play it on the TV or on the go.

That is the idea. But there is an important distinction between backward compatibility and every game running perfectly on a handheld. Even if Sony supports PS4 and PS5 games, some titles may require patches, optimization or other technical adjustments. So I would not assume that every PS5 game will automatically run at the same quality as it does on a home console.

Expected Performance

The rumored handheld is expected to use a low-power AMD chip designed specifically for portable gaming. That means it will not be as powerful as the PS6 home console. But the reports suggest Sony is aiming for a device that can deliver a much stronger experience than older handhelds. There will be support for Sony's PSSR upscaling technology, which could help the device produce a sharper image without rendering every frame at full native resolution. But again, this is where expectations need to be realistic. A 15W handheld will have to balance performance, battery life, heat and noise. It could be powerful for a portable device, but that does not mean it will match the PS6 home console.

Expected Nigeria Price

There is no official Nigerian price for the rumored handheld. The current price estimates circulating online suggest a possible international price of around $399–$499, although some reports have suggested a wider range. Using an illustrative exchange rate of ₦1,600 to $1, that would be approximately:

  • $399 → ₦638,400

  • $499 → ₦798,400

That gives a rough Nigerian equivalent of ₦640,000–₦800,000. But this is not a confirmed Nigeria retail price. An imported console could cost more after shipping, taxes, retailer margins and availability. If Sony launches the device at a higher price, the Nigerian equivalent could also move above ₦800,000. So I would treat ₦650,000–₦850,000 as a speculative budgeting range, not a price you should expect to see in Nigerian stores.

When Could It Launch?

The most common rumor is that Canis could launch alongside the PS6 in late 2027. However, Sony has not confirmed that date. In fact, Sony executives have said that the timing and pricing of its next-generation platform had not been finalized, with component costs and supply-chain uncertainty affecting planning. That means late 2027 should be treated as a rumored target, not a confirmed release date.

Final Verdict

The rumored PS6 Portable / Project Canis could be one of Sony's most interesting gaming products in years. The idea of a handheld that runs games locally, supports older PlayStation titles and works alongside the PS6 home console is genuinely exciting. But right now, it is still a rumor. If Sony launches it around ₦650,000–₦850,000, it could become a serious option for Nigerian gamers who want a powerful portable console. But until Sony confirms the device, the safest advice is simple: Don't buy the rumor. Wait for the real PlayStation.
