Huawei Pura X Max Review: Price, Specs And Features

The Huawei Pura X Max takes Huawei's wide-screen foldable concept and turns it into a much more serious flagship.

It combines a compact 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.7-inch folding OLED screen, Kirin 9030 Pro processor, HarmonyOS 7 and a particularly ambitious XMAGE camera system. Huawei also manages to fit a 5,300mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging into the device.

The phone starts at ¥10,999 in China. Nigerian availability remains limited, however, making this primarily an import option for now.

Huawei's official specifications confirm 12GB/256GB and 12GB/512GB versions, while the Collector's Edition offers 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB. There's no memory-card expansion.

The ₦2.8m–₦3.5m Nigerian figure is an import-budget estimate, not an official retail price. Current Jumia shows other Huawei foldables such as the Mate X7 and Mate XT, but not a reliable Pura X Max listing.

Two Wide OLED Displays

The Pura X Max's unusual proportions are central to its appeal. Closed, there's a 5.4-inch 1848 × 1264 OLED display. Opening the phone reveals a considerably larger 7.7-inch 2584 × 1828 flexible OLED panel. Both use LTPO 2.0 technology with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rates and 1.07 billion colors. Huawei also specifies 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

The wide inner display should be particularly useful for documents, websites, multitasking and videos. Rather than feeling like an unusually tall phone when unfolded, the Pura X Max moves closer to a compact tablet. Huawei protects the outside with second-generation Kunlun Glass, while the folding display uses UTG.

Kirin 9030 Pro and HarmonyOS 7

Huawei equips the Pura X Max with its Kirin 9030 Pro processor and HarmonyOS 7.

The company claims overall device performance has improved by 38%, attributing the increase to deeper optimization between the hardware, operating system, cloud services and chipset. That's Huawei's own performance claim rather than an independent benchmark result. HarmonyOS 7 also brings extensive AI functionality through Huawei's Xiaoyi assistant, including proactive reminders, travel assistance and AI-powered creative tools.

There's an important limitation for international buyers, though: this is fundamentally a China-market HarmonyOS device. Anyone importing it should investigate app compatibility and Google-service requirements before spending several million naira.

XMAGE Camera System Is a Highlight

Photography may be the Pura X Max's strongest feature. The primary camera is a 50MP RYYB sensor with OIS and a ten-step physical variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. That's joined by a 12.5MP RYYB Ultra Wide and, more importantly, a 50MP f/2.2 periscope telephoto with OIS.

The telephoto provides approximately 3.5x optical zoom, 7x optical-quality zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. Huawei also uses its second-generation Red Maple color camera to improve color reproduction. The camera software includes Super Night mode, telephoto macro, RAW photography, HDR Vivid video, Log recording, portrait modes and several AI-assisted composition and image-enhancement tools.

For a foldable, that's an unusually comprehensive camera package.

5,300mAh Battery With 50W Wireless Charging

Huawei fits a 5,300mAh battery inside the Pura X Max. It supports 66W Huawei SuperCharge over USB-C and up to 50W wireless charging with compatible Huawei equipment. Reverse wireless charging is supported as well.

Those are strong charging specifications for a foldable. Wireless charging at up to 50W is particularly useful for buyers who don't want the convenience of wireless charging to mean dramatically slower charging speeds.

Connectivity Is Flagship-Level

The Pura X Max includes Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, USB-C with USB 3.1 Gen 1 capability and dual-frequency GPS, alongside Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS and NavIC positioning support. Huawei also offers satellite messaging on the Collector's Edition, but the company explicitly says those BeiDou satellite features are limited to mainland China.

That distinction matters for anyone considering importing the phone.

Who Should Buy the Pura X Max?

The Pura X Max makes the most sense for foldable enthusiasts, photographers and productivity-focused buyers who want something different from Samsung, Xiaomi or Apple.

Its 7.7-inch inner screen provides plenty of room for multitasking, while the 50MP variable-aperture main camera and 50MP periscope make it particularly attractive for mobile photography. The large battery and fast wireless charging are also welcome for business users and travellers.

Limitations

The biggest issue isn't the hardware — it's international practicality. HarmonyOS 7 and China-focused services mean buyers outside China need to research application compatibility carefully. The satellite functions are also China-only, and local warranty/support could become complicated with an imported device.

There's no microSD expansion, and an expected imported price approaching or exceeding ₦3 million puts it firmly in ultra-premium territory. Most importantly, there's currently no established Nigerian retail price. Buyers should be cautious about treating speculative local price pages as actual available stock.

Final Verdict

The Huawei Pura X Max is one of Huawei's most ambitious foldables, particularly from a camera perspective. Its combination of a 7.7-inch 120Hz LTPO folding OLED, Kirin 9030 Pro, HarmonyOS 7, 50MP variable-aperture main camera, 50MP 3.5x periscope, 5,300mAh battery and 50W wireless charging gives it genuine flagship hardware.

The ¥10,999 Chinese starting price is competitive within the ultra-premium foldable category. For Nigerian buyers, however, I'd treat ₦2.8m–₦3.5m only as an early import budget, not a confirmed price.

If you're comfortable importing a China-market HarmonyOS phone, the Pura X Max offers exceptional camera hardware and an unusual wide-screen foldable experience. If effortless Google-service compatibility, local warranty and readily available accessories matter more, a globally distributed foldable may still be the safer purchase.
