POCO F9 Ultra Review: Specs, Price & Features

The POCO F9 Ultra is the kind of phone that makes you question how much you really need to spend on a flagship. It has a huge battery, a powerful Snapdragon processor, a 200MP camera and a display that can reach a 185Hz refresh rate. It also comes with a dedicated graphics boost chip and a Bose-branded audio system. But the interesting thing is that POCO is not trying to compete only on specifications. The F9 Ultra is also about the experience: gaming, battery life, photography, sound and a premium design.

So, is it worth buying in Nigeria?

The Nigerian price is an estimate based on reported international pricing, not an official local launch price. The final cost could vary depending on the seller, storage version, import charges and availability.

Performance Is Still the Main Attraction

The F9 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, built on a 3nm process. That is the kind of processor you expect in a flagship phone. For everyday use, it should have no trouble handling demanding apps, multitasking and gaming. But POCO has also added a dedicated VisionBoost D8 graphics chip, which is designed to improve image quality and frame-rate performance in supported games.

The phone also supports up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, which is useful if you install a lot of games or keep large files on your device. That makes the F9 Ultra particularly interesting for people who want a phone that can handle heavy workloads without feeling slow.

The 185Hz Display Is a Big Selling Point

The F9 Ultra has a 6.9-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2608 × 1200 and a refresh rate of up to 185Hz. That is a very high refresh rate for a smartphone. It should make scrolling and animations feel smooth, while supported games can take advantage of the higher refresh rate. The display also has a reported peak brightness of 10,000 nits, although that figure applies to a small portion of the screen rather than the entire panel.

For normal use, the important thing is that the screen should be bright enough for outdoor viewing and enjoyable for movies, gaming and browsing.

The 8,050mAh Battery Is the Real Highlight

This is probably the most impressive part of the phone. The F9 Ultra has an 8,050mAh battery, which is considerably larger than what you find in most flagship smartphones. POCO says the phone can deliver up to two days of battery life, although actual endurance will depend on how you use it. That is especially useful for people who spend long hours gaming, watching videos or using mobile data. The phone also supports 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. So even though the battery is huge, you are not necessarily waiting all day for it to charge.

For Nigerian users who deal with power interruptions or spend long periods away from a socket, this is a genuinely useful combination.

The Camera System Is More Serious Than Before

The F9 Ultra has a 200MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. That is a substantial upgrade in ambition for POCO. The periscope camera is particularly interesting because it gives the phone a dedicated long-range zoom lens rather than relying entirely on digital zoom. The phone can also record 8K video at 30fps and 4K video at up to 60fps with the rear camera. That makes it more appealing to people who want a phone that can handle photography and video without giving up performance. But I would still wait for more long-term camera testing before calling it a camera champion.

Bose Audio Is a Nice Extra

One of the more unusual features is the Bose-branded 2.1 audio system, which includes an independent subwoofer. That is not something you see on most smartphones. POCO says the system is designed to improve bass and overall sound quality, while the independent subwoofer helps create a more immersive audio experience. For people who watch a lot of movies, listen to music or play games without headphones, this could be a surprisingly enjoyable feature.

POCO F9 Ultra Price in Nigeria

The international starting price for the F9 Ultra is reported at $799, with higher prices for the 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB versions. Using an illustrative exchange rate of ₦1,600 to $1, that works out to approximately:

  • $799 → ₦1,278,400

  • $949 → ₦1,518,400

  • $1,199 → ₦1,918,400

However, those are only currency conversions. For Nigerian buyers, I would budget around ₦1.3 million–₦2.0 million, depending on the storage version and seller. That is not a confirmed Nigerian retail price, and local availability may affect the final cost.

Who Should Buy the POCO F9 Ultra?

The F9 Ultra makes the most sense for people who want a high-performance flagship without paying the price of the most expensive mainstream phones.

It is particularly attractive for:

  • Mobile gamers who want a powerful processor and high-refresh-rate display.

  • Heavy users who need long battery life.

  • Content creators who want a capable camera system.

  • People who watch a lot of movies and listen to music.

  • Buyers who want a large amount of storage.

But if you mainly use WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and basic browsing, this is probably more phone than you need.

Final Verdict

The POCO F9 Ultra is a serious flagship phone. It combines a powerful processor, a huge battery, a high-refresh-rate AMOLED display and a much more ambitious camera system than earlier POCO flagships. The biggest question for Nigerian buyers is the price. At an estimated ₦1.3 million–₦2.0 million, it is no longer a budget phone, but it could still offer strong value compared with other flagship devices.

If you want a phone that prioritises performance, battery life and a premium feature set, the F9 Ultra is worth considering. But if you are buying mainly for everyday tasks, you can get a much cheaper phone that will do the job just fine.
