Xiaomi 18 Fold Review: A Foldable Phone Built for Multitasking

Foldable phones have always promised to do more than a normal smartphone. The problem is that many of them still feel like a compromise: a tall cover screen when folded, a large screen when opened, and a price that makes you think twice before taking the phone out of your pocket.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is trying something different. Instead of following the usual tall, narrow foldable design, Xiaomi has introduced a wider “mid-fold” approach. It has a 5.38-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch internal foldable screen, giving it a more compact, passport-like shape when folded. That makes it interesting for people who want a phone that can also function as a small tablet.

The Design Is the Main Attraction

The most interesting thing about the 18 Fold is not just that it folds. It is how it folds. The wider design is intended to make the phone more comfortable to use when closed, while the internal screen gives you a much larger workspace when opened. That could be useful for people who want to read documents, browse websites, manage emails or use multiple apps without carrying a separate tablet. It also gives the phone a distinctive identity. This is not simply another foldable trying to copy Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold design.

The 7.58-inch Screen Could Be Great for Work

The internal display is a 7.58-inch LTPO OLED panel, which is considerably larger than a conventional smartphone screen. That is where the phone's best use case becomes clear. If you regularly read PDFs, review spreadsheets, manage documents or work with multiple apps, the larger screen could make the experience much more comfortable. For example, you could have a document open while taking notes, or use a browser alongside a messaging app. It is not going to replace a full laptop, but it could reduce the number of times you need to reach for a tablet.

XRING O3: Xiaomi's New Flagship Chip

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to be the first smartphone to feature Xiaomi's new XRING O3 processor, built using a reported 3nm process. That is a significant development for Xiaomi. The company is moving further into designing its own flagship silicon rather than relying entirely on Qualcomm or MediaTek. The phone is also reported to support LPDDR6 memory, with configurations of up to 16GB RAM. If the final hardware performs as expected, the 18 Fold should be capable of handling demanding apps, multitasking and gaming. But it is important to remember that a new processor does not automatically guarantee better real-world performance. Battery efficiency, software optimisation and thermal management will matter just as much.

The Camera System Looks Serious

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is reported to feature a 200MP main camera, alongside two 50MP cameras. Xiaomi has also shown the phone with a Leica-developed camera system, which suggests the company is taking photography seriously. That could make the 18 Fold more appealing to people who want a foldable without giving up camera quality.

However, megapixels alone do not determine image quality. The real test will be how the cameras perform in low light, how well the zoom works and how consistent the processing is.

6,000mAh Battery and 67W Charging

The phone is reported to have a 6,000mAh battery, which is a substantial capacity for a foldable device. That is especially important because foldable phones have to power two displays. A large battery could help offset the extra power consumption from the internal screen. The reported 67W wired charging should also make topping up reasonably quick, while wireless charging is listed at 50W. Still, the real battery-life test will be how long the phone lasts when using the large internal display regularly.

Xiaomi 18 Fold Price in Nigeria

The Xiaomi 18 Fold has not yet received an official Nigerian retail price. Current reports suggest a possible starting price of around CN¥12,000, although Xiaomi has not confirmed the final price. Using an illustrative exchange rate of ₦1,350 to $1, that would be roughly ₦2.36 million. But that is only a currency conversion. An imported phone could cost more after shipping, taxes, retailer margins and other import-related charges. So for Nigerian buyers, I would treat ₦2.3 million–₦3 million as a speculative budgeting range, not a confirmed Nigerian price.

Best Use Cases for the Xiaomi 18 Fold

The 18 Fold makes the most sense for people who want a phone that can also function as a compact tablet.

1. Productivity
The larger internal screen could be useful for reading documents, reviewing spreadsheets, managing emails and multitasking.

2. Content Consumption
If you watch a lot of YouTube, read articles or browse the web, the 7.58-inch display could provide a more immersive experience.

3. Photography
The reported Leica camera system and 200MP main sensor could make it attractive to people who want a foldable with a serious camera setup.

4. People Who Want Something Different
The mid-fold design is unusual, and that alone may appeal to buyers who want a phone that stands out from the usual slab smartphones.

Final Verdict

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is one of the more interesting foldable phones to watch in 2026. Its wider design, large internal display, XRING O3 processor and reported 6,000mAh battery make it a serious attempt to combine smartphone portability with tablet-style productivity. But the price could be its biggest challenge. At a possible ₦2.3 million–₦3 million, it would be a premium purchase for Nigerian buyers, especially if local availability is limited. If you want a foldable phone that feels genuinely different and could replace a tablet for some tasks, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is worth watching. But if you are buying mainly for value, a conventional flagship phone may still make more financial sense.
