How to Find Your House Postcode in Nigeria: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Have you ever been filling out an online form, ordering something online or registering for a service when suddenly you're asked to enter your postcode?
For many Nigerians, this is where the confusion begins. Some enter their state's old postal code, others search Google for their area's postcode, while some simply guess.

Nigeria now has a new way to identify buildings. On October 1, 2026, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) launched its National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, which gives addressable buildings an 11-character digital postcode. Unlike traditional area-based postal codes, the new system identifies specific buildings. .

Here's how to find yours.

Method 1: Find your house postcode using your phone

This is the easiest method if you're currently at home.

Step 1: Visit the official NIPOST website
Open postcode.gov.ng on your phone and follow the available option to access the postcode application.

Step 2: Select Find My Postcode
Open the application and tap Find My Postcode.

Step 3: Allow location access
Your phone will request permission to access your location. Allow it so the application can identify your general area.

Step 4: Locate your building
A satellite map will display nearby buildings. Find your house using surrounding roads, neighbouring buildings or recognizable landmarks.

Step 5: Tap your house
Select the correct building on the map. Your assigned digital postcode will appear.

Step 6: Copy or save it
You can copy the postcode, save it for future use or share it with someone who needs your address. NIPOST explains this process in its official postcode lookup guide.

Important: Don't automatically select the nearest building. Your neighbour's house may have a different postcode, even if you share the same street.

Method 2: Find your postcode using your house address

What if you're not currently at home? You can still search for your building.

Visit the NIPOST Digital Postcode platform and open the postcode search feature.

Enter your house address, street or recognizable location details. Select the matching result and check its position on the satellite map. Once you've confirmed the correct building, copy its digital postcode.

This method is useful when checking your family home, office, business premises or another address without physically visiting the location. What does a Nigerian digital postcode look like?

A digital postcode uses letters and numbers divided into geographical segments.

For example:

FC-02-A09-DB-09

The segments represent the state, local government area, district, area and building unit.

This is an illustrative format, not a postcode you should use for your own address.
Unlike a traditional six-digit postal code, the new digital postcode identifies a specific building.

What if your house doesn't have a postcode?

Don't panic or borrow your neighbour's code. If your building isn't listed, NIPOST allows you to request a postcode. Open the application, search for your location and select Request Postcode when no code is available.

Provide your address, building description and any requested supporting information. NIPOST says requests are reviewed, with a response expected within 24 hours, although that is not a guaranteed approval time.

Is finding your postcode free? Yes. NIPOST says individuals can find, save and share their digital postcodes free of charge through its official website and application.

You don't need to pay an agent simply to look up an existing postcode.

Final thoughts

Your house postcode can make it easier to communicate your location for deliveries, visits and other address-related services. Once you find it, save it somewhere accessible.

And remember: your digital postcode belongs to the building, not to you personally. If you move to another house, you'll need the postcode assigned to your new address.
