Tecno POP 20 Review: A ₦160,000 Budget Phone With a 120Hz Display and 5,000mAh Battery

If you're shopping for an affordable smartphone in Nigeria in 2026, the Tecno POP 20 is one of the phones worth considering. It is not designed to compete with Tecno's CAMON or POVA flagships, but instead focuses on the features that matter most to budget buyers: a large display, long battery life, 4G connectivity, expandable memory and a relatively durable body. The POP 20 also brings a feature that is still uncommon at this price: a 120Hz display.

With current Nigerian listings putting the phone around ₦153,000–₦180,000 depending on storage and seller, it is positioned squarely in the entry-level smartphone market.

Tecno's official confirm the Android 15 operating system, Unisoc T7250 processor, 6.75-inch 120Hz display, 13MP rear camera, 8MP selfie camera and 5,000mAh battery.

Design and Display

The POP 20 uses a large 6.75-inch display, making it particularly suitable for people who spend a lot of time watching YouTube, TikTok, Facebook or movies on their phones.

The resolution is 720 × 1600, so this is an HD+ panel rather than the sharper Full HD+ displays found on more expensive smartphones. However, Tecno compensates somewhat with a 120Hz refresh rate. Scrolling through websites, social media feeds and supported applications should feel noticeably smoother than on a conventional 60Hz budget phone.

For students and younger users who primarily want a large screen for entertainment, messaging and schoolwork, this is one of the POP 20's strongest features.

Performance: What Can the POP 20 Handle?

The phone is powered by the Unisoc T7250, an entry-level octa-core processor. This isn't a gaming chipset, so buyers should keep their expectations realistic. The POP 20 is better suited to everyday tasks such as:

  • WhatsApp

  • Facebook and Instagram

  • YouTube

  • Web browsing

  • Online classes

  • Music streaming

  • Mobile banking

  • Light gaming

The phone comes with 4GB of physical RAM, with Tecno offering up to another 4GB through extended RAM technology on supported configurations. Storage is available in 64GB and 128GB versions. The 128GB version is the one I'd recommend if the price difference is reasonable. Modern apps, WhatsApp media and videos can consume 64GB surprisingly quickly.

5,000mAh Battery Is a Major Advantage

Battery life is another reason the POP 20 makes sense for Nigerian buyers. The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery and supports charging of up to 15W. Tecno says the device can provide more than 11 hours of continuous video playback under its laboratory testing conditions. Real-world battery life will obviously depend on network strength, brightness, gaming, video playback and other usage. Still, 5,000mAh is a healthy capacity for an entry-level smartphone. For a student using the phone for WhatsApp, browsing, schoolwork and occasional entertainment, getting through a full day should be a realistic expectation.

One thing to note is that Tecno's official state 15W fast charging, while some retailer listings may describe the bundled charger differently. Buyers should therefore check exactly what charger is included with the particular Nigerian SKU they purchase.

Cameras: Basic but Practical

The POP 20 has a 13MP rear camera with dual flash and an 8MP front camera. This is not a phone I'd recommend specifically for photos. Instead, the camera setup is aimed at everyday photography: taking pictures for WhatsApp, capturing documents, recording simple videos and making video calls. In good daylight, the 13MP camera should be adequate for its price category. Low-light photography is where buyers should expect more limitations.

Is the Tecno POP 20 Durable?

Interestingly, durability is one of the areas where Tecno has tried to give the POP 20 an advantage over ordinary budget phones. The phone carries an IP64 rating for dust and water resistance, and Tecno advertises drop resistance from heights of up to 1.2 metres. That doesn't make the phone waterproof. IP64 protection should not be interpreted as permission to submerge it in water. However, protection against dust and splashes can be useful for students, commuters and users who frequently carry their phones outdoors.

Tecno also advertises a four-year lasting fluency claim for the POP 20, aimed at maintaining a usable experience over a longer period.

Useful Extra Features

The POP 20 has several features that make it more practical than its price might suggest. It includes a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio, OTG and an infrared remote-control function. The phone also supports FreeLink 2.0, which Tecno promotes as a way to communicate through compatible devices without relying on conventional cellular connectivity.

These aren't necessarily reasons to buy the phone by themselves, but they add value to an already inexpensive device.

Tecno POP 20 Price in Nigeria

The POP 20's price varies significantly depending on storage, seller and current promotions. At the time of checking, Konga lists a 4GB/128GB model at ₦153,200, while Jumia listings range from approximately ₦159,900 for 64GB to around ₦178,000 for 128GB.

Version

Current Nigerian price range

4GB + 64GB

About ₦160,000–₦175,000

4GB + 128GB

About ₦153,000–₦180,000

Prices can change quickly, particularly on marketplace platforms, so check the seller, warranty and exact specification before paying.

Should You Buy the Tecno POP 20?

The POP 20 makes the most sense for someone who wants a cheap but usable smartphone rather than a performance-focused device. Its biggest strengths are the 120Hz 6.75-inch display, 5,000mAh battery, 4G connectivity, IP64 protection, USB-C, fingerprint scanner and relatively low price. Its biggest weakness is performance. The Unisoc T7250 is designed for everyday use rather than demanding gaming or heavy multitasking.

Our Verdict

Buy it if: you need an affordable phone for WhatsApp, social media, schoolwork, YouTube, browsing and everyday communication.

Consider something more powerful if: you play demanding games, edit videos, take lots of high-quality photos or need serious multitasking.

At around ₦160,000–₦180,000, the Tecno POP 20 is a solid entry-level option in Nigeria. The 120Hz screen and 5,000mAh battery are particularly attractive at this price, while IP64 protection and the four-year fluency claim add some reassurance for buyers who want to keep the phone for several years.

Our pick: Get the 128GB version if the price difference is small. The additional storage will likely be more valuable over time than the cheaper 64GB option.
